Cornerstone University found itself at a crossroads. Without a baseball team, the generous donation of $2 million for a stadium seemed like a missed opportunity. The university was also grappling with financial constraints and a pressing need for additional student housing. It was during a board meeting that a seemingly impossible solution emerged.
While the initial plan was a straightforward baseball stadium with standard amenities, the financial landscape dictated a more creative approach. The stadium's infrastructure costs, including roads and utilities, represented a significant portion of the budget.
Wayne Visbeen was a university board member at the time and, hearing these issues described, suggested a groundbreaking idea: combining the stadium with a dormitory. The vision was a colossal structure that would house a baseball field worthy of professional leagues and accommodate students. The challenge was to leverage the stadium's funding to subsidize the dormitory, effectively creating a two-for-one solution.
The proposal was met with equal parts skepticism and excitement. Some questioned the feasibility and wisdom of such an ambitious undertaking, while others saw it as a stroke of genius. Ultimately, the university embraced the audacious plan, forming a dedicated team to bring this vision to life.
Visbeen Architects took on the challenge of creating the conceptual designs for CU’s newest venture. The result was DeWitt Field, a stunning testament to architectural innovation. The stadium's imposing presence and sophisticated design rivaled minor league ballparks. Beyond the outfield, the building seamlessly transitioned into a modern dormitory, offering students a unique living experience. An underground tunnel connected the dugout to the locker rooms, adding a touch of grandeur to the athlete's experience. State-of-the-art pitching and batting cages further elevated the facility, making it a magnet for talented baseball players.
Visbeen’s idea paid off handsomely. The impressive stadium revitalized the athletic program and attracted top-tier baseball recruits. In a classic case of "if you build it, they will come," the university experienced a surge in interest from prospective students drawn to the unique campus amenities.
