The commercial design project for Thacker Sleight law offices, undertaken by Visbeen Architects, transformed a historic property in the Heritage Hill district of Grand Rapids into a state-of-the-art attorney’s office. The original structure, the Damon Hatch House, was built in the 1840s when Grand Rapids was still a village. The home was in poor condition before its conversion. Despite the logistical challenges posed by the building’s status as a protected historic landmark, Visbeen Architects turned the old home into a stunning, high-tech office space, seamlessly blending the old with the new.
The house's exterior, which had to be preserved according to historic landmark regulations, underwent a meticulous restoration process. Visbeen Architects and the builder worked closely with the historic board to ensure all exterior elements were restored rather than replaced. This included applying fresh paint, restoring the windows, and maintaining the architectural integrity of the original design. The team faced numerous challenges but rolled with the punches, successfully appeasing the historic board and maintaining the property's historic charm.
Inside, the transformation was dramatic. The living room was converted into an office space for the two partners, complete with a hidden bookcase entry, adding an element of intrigue and modernity. Dual conference rooms were designed at the front of the building, one for each attorney, with a central meeting area in between. Despite the limitations imposed by the historic structure, Visbeen Architects managed to modernize the interior while preserving significant historical features such as the interior trim work, fireplace mantle, and show-stopping atrium. Major updates included the installation of modern mechanicals, air conditioning, heating, and plumbing, ensuring the building met current standards and codes.
The design of the Thacker Sleight law offices is a testament to Visbeen Architects' meticulous attention to detail and creativity. By preserving the historic elements of the house and integrating high-tech modern amenities, the firm created a functional and aesthetically pleasing workspace that honors the building's rich history.
